Curriculum Overview

Our Curriculum at St. Edward's

‘An inclusive education finds a place for all and does not select, in an elitist way, the beneficiaries of its efforts’.

                                                             Pope Francis

At St. Edward’s Catholic Primary School, we strive to ensure that we are providing a curriculum that meets the needs of all the children in our school.  In doing so, we embrace the diversity within our community, celebrating this and living out our mission statement of Jesus Christ being at the heart of all that we do, demonstrating our understanding of everyone being equal in the eyes of God.

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all learners, and opportunities for each individual to thrive.  We ensure that all National Curriculum expectations are met and work hard to provide a creative approach to the way in which this is implemented.  We teach lessons that inspire and engage our children who are living in a world of constant change and discovery.  We aim to structure teaching and learning in such a way that our children develop a passion for learning and can work independently and as part of a team.  We know that reading is central to the development of a child’s mind and communication and therefore place reading at the very heart of our curriculum.  Each day, high quality texts are shared and explored with children to support them in becoming lifelong readers.

Our staff are passionate about ensuring that children at St. Edward’s have a wide variety of experiences during their primary education.  We organise exciting educational visits, including residentials, to support children’s understanding and to help them to grow in confidence and in faith.  We promote a culture of community engagement and encourage children to take on key roles within the school to develop their leadership qualities and self-esteem.

The taught and hidden curriculum at St. Edward’s combine to provide children with the opportunities to meet their full potential and understand their roles as local and global citizens.  Children will understand the Catholic faith and know that they are a child of God with a vocation to live their lives to the fullest and be the best people that they can be.
