Our School Dog - Millie

Millie is officially our St Edward's school dog. We love her! She is a Sproodle who belongs to Mrs Kennett, our Head Teacher and her family but during the day we all get to see her, talk to her and stroke her if we are allowed. Miss Atkins is the specially trained Teaching Assistant who looks after Millie during the day to make sure that she is working and also resting.

  • We have been able to appreciate that we can communicate through our body language and kind use of our hands and feet, which are as important as our words.
  • Millie encourages us to read more fluently, especially when she likes to listen to our stories
  • Millie welcomes us in every morning and makes us want to come into school
  • We can complete a Millie chart and this means that we can keep being good listeners and well behaved in order to earn some extra Millie moments
  • The school playground and grounds needs to be litter free not just to show how proud we are of the school but also so that Millie does not pick something up which could make her feel poorly if she swallowed it
  • Millie helps us to be calm if we are feeling worried about anything-just a little stroke of her can make everything seem better!
  • To encourage us to be on time, we can hold the lead and take Millie into school.
  • Millie reminds us to keep the classrooms tidy because she cannot come into a classroom with a messy floor. Each week we get the chance to win Dog Mentor Class of the Week. This means we get the chance to have a whole class treat with Millie eg make special dog treats
  • Some children work on the Dog Mentor Programme itself and can work with Millie. She has helped some of us to be transformed and to be able to do 'Happy Breathing' to keep us calm and happy
