  • Welcome to Year Six

Year 6 is an exciting and significant year as children reach the final stage of their primary school journey and begin preparing for the transition to secondary school. It is a year filled with opportunities for growth, challenge, and achievement as pupils develop academically, socially, and spiritually. Throughout the year, we encourage independence, resilience, responsibility, and leadership, helping every child to grow in confidence and feel fully prepared for the next chapter of their education.

In Year 6, children build upon and refine their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through engaging lessons, thought-provoking discussions, and practical problem-solving opportunities. They explore high-quality texts, undertake extended writing across a range of genres, and tackle increasingly complex mathematical concepts and investigations. Beyond the core subjects, our broad and balanced curriculum offers enriching learning experiences in science, history, geography, and many other areas, fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

We look forward to working in partnership with families to make Year 6 a rewarding, memorable, and successful year for every child.

    Our curriculum includes:

    • English, where pupils study a wide range of high-quality and increasingly challenging texts. Children develop their skills in writing narratives, reports, balanced arguments, persuasive texts, formal letters, diary entries, biographies, newspaper reports and poetry. They build their understanding of vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, whilst applying ambitious spelling patterns and editing skills to write effectively for different audiences and purposes.
    • Mathematics, where children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills across all areas of the National Curriculum. Pupils deepen their understanding of place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry, statistics and measurement. They are encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, make connections between concepts and apply their knowledge to real-life contexts, whilst becoming increasingly confident and accurate with key number facts and multiplication tables.
    • Science, carrying out engaging investigations and experiments, exploring topics such as electricity, light, evolution and the natural world.
    • History, developing an understanding of the past through in-depth studies of significant events, including World War II and its lasting impact on society.
    • Geography, investigating global issues and environmental challenges, while building map-reading and fieldwork skills to better understand the world around us.
    • Art and Design, expressing creativity through a range of artistic techniques, including observational sketching, painting and mixed-media projects.
    • Music, building confidence in performing, composing and listening to music, while developing an appreciation of different musical styles and traditions.
    • Physical Education, promoting health, fitness and wellbeing through a variety of sports and physical activities that encourage teamwork, resilience and self-confidence.
    • Italian, where children develop their conversational language through topics such as: reading and writing the date, asking about pets, talking about their home and clothes.

    Living Our Catholic Faith:

Faith is at the heart of life in Year 6 and in our school community. We begin and end each day with prayer and encourage children to live out Gospel values through kindness, respect, compassion, and service to others. Throughout the year, children explore the Jesuit virtues of being Curious and Active, Intentional and Prophetic, Grateful and Generous, Attentive and Discerning, Compassionate and Loving, and Faith-filled and Hopeful.

In Religious Education, children deepen their understanding of God's plan through topics such as Creation and Covenant, Prophecy and Promise, Galilee to Jerusalem, Desert to Garden, Ends of the Earth, and Dialogue and Encounter. They learn more about Scripture, develop their knowledge of the Catholic faith, and reflect on how they can follow Jesus' example in their daily lives.

A significant part of the Year 6 journey is preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Through prayer and reflection, children deepen their understanding of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the commitment involved in living out their faith. As they prepare for this important milestone, pupils are encouraged to embrace opportunities for leadership, responsibility and service, becoming positive role models who are ready to continue their faith journey as they move on to secondary school.

A Message from the Year 6 Teachers:

"Welcome to Year 6, an exciting and memorable year filled with new challenges, opportunities and achievements. As the oldest pupils in the school, children are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and resilience while growing in faith and character. We strive to nurture curious learners who show kindness, respect and compassion in all that they do, living out Gospel values both in and beyond the classroom. We look forward to working in partnership with you to ensure your child enjoys a rewarding, successful and fulfilling final year of primary school."

How Parents Can Support at Home:

Working together, we can help your child make the most of their Year 6 experience. You can support your child at home by:

    • Reading and discussing a range of challenging texts, encouraging them to share their opinions, justify their ideas and engage in thoughtful discussion and debate.
    • Practising key spelling, grammar and mathematics skills regularly using online resources such as SATs Companion and Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).
    • Promoting independence and responsibility by encouraging your child to manage their homework, organise their belongings and prepare for school each day.
    • Exploring current events together, discussing important local, national and global issues and linking these to Catholic values and social responsibility.
    • Celebrating effort, perseverance and progress, recognising the importance of resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.
    • Nurturing faith at home through prayer, conversations about Gospel values and sharing what your child has been learning in Religious Education.

Together, we can help every child grow in confidence, achieve their potential and enjoy a successful and rewarding final year of primary school.
