Welcome to Reception
Reception is the beginning of an exciting learning journey! In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we provide a nurturing, stimulating and engaging environment where children feel safe, valued and inspired to learn. Our aim is to help every child grow in confidence, develop independence and become enthusiastic learners through purposeful play and meaningful experiences.
At St Edward's, Jesus is at the heart of all that we do, and this is reflected in the caring relationships, values and opportunities we provide for every child.
Children learn through a balance of adult-led activities and child-initiated play, covering the seven areas of learning.
Our curriculum includes:
- Communication and Language - developing speaking, listening and conversation skills.
- Physical Development - building strength, coordination, balance and confidence through movement.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development - learning to share, cooperate, build friendships and manage feelings.
- Literacy - developing a love of books alongside early reading, phonics and writing skills.
- Mathematics - exploring number, shape, pattern and problem-solving through practical learning.
- Understanding the World - discovering people, places, nature, technology and the wider community.
- Expressive Arts and Design - encouraging creativity through art, music, dance, role play and imaginative experiences.
Our outdoor learning environment provides daily opportunities for exploration, investigation and active learning, helping children develop physically, socially and academically.
Living Our Catholic Faith:
Faith is an important part of life in Reception. Children take part in daily prayer, class worship and Religious Education lessons, where they learn about Bible stories, the teachings of Jesus and the Catholic faith.
Throughout the year, children take part in school Masses, liturgies and celebrations linked to the Church's liturgical calendar, including Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. These experiences help children develop their understanding of faith and their place within our school and parish community.
Children are encouraged to show kindness, respect and care for others, helping them to grow both spiritually and personally.

How Parents Can Support at Home:
Your support at home plays a vital role in your child's learning and development. Here are some simple ways to help:
- Read together every day - share stories, discuss pictures and enjoy books together.
- Practise counting and recognising numbers in everyday situations.
- Support early phonics and letter formation through fun activities and games.
- Encourage independence - allow your child to dress themselves, tidy away toys and complete simple tasks.
- Talk about the world around you - notice changes in nature, discuss experiences and ask questions.
- Celebrate effort and achievement - praise perseverance, resilience and progress.
- Share prayers and reflections at home as part of family life.
Together, we can make Reception a happy, successful and rewarding year for every child.
