Attendance
Children need to be in school every day and on time in order to experience the very best educational opportunities possible at St Edward's.
Parents are responsible for:
- ensuring that their child's attendance is as close to 100% as possible.
- notifying school as to the reason for their child's absence.
- following the recommended guideleines following contagious illnesses.
- keeping in daily contact via phone with the school about their child's health.
- speaking to school about changes in family circumstances that would account for a change in attendance, so that school can help and support families in need.
POOR ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY IS A SAFEGUARDING CONCERN
It is widely understood by professionals that poor attendance is an indicator that there are other wider concerns within the family home. School will express their concerns to parents, make a home visit, initiate an Early Help referral or make a safeguarding referral to Birmingham Children's Services.
Allowing for illnesses, attendance becomes a concern for school when it falls below 95% and/or there are patterns emerging with the family, including siblings' attendance. School also become concerned about frequent patterns of lateness.
School monitors the daily attendance of every child and are expected to account for the whereabouts of all children. Children with attendance under 90% are discussed by the Attendance team at least every half term. Attendance clinics are organised for parents to attend and speak to Trevina Edwards and Mrs Kennett.
Impact of poor attendance is significant on friendships, confidence and on academic ability:
Absence by end of the year | Days missed | Weeks missed | Lessons missed |
90% | 19 days | 4 weeks | 100 lessons |
80% | 38 days | 8 weeks | 200 lessons |
70% | 57 days | 11.5 weeks | 290 lessons |
The ideal is 95% and above which allows for a period of sickness. St Edward’s follows the Birmingham LA Policy.
