"Today is a great day to learn something new!"

P.E

This half term our P.E lesson is every Thursday morning. We are completing games indoors and outside so winter P.E uniform can be worn. Your child can wear:

  • Jogging bottoms (blue)
  • School P.E t-shirt
  • School cardigan or jumper
  • Trainers
  • Please remember no earrings should be worn for health and safety reasons and a white round neck t-shirt with the school badge and plain blue or black shorts/ tracksuit bottoms should be worn.

Welcome to Class 1JW. We are a class of 31 children working with Miss Westwood.

Mrs Phipson, Mrs Hulme, Miss Cleary and Mrs Agnello are often around to lend a helping hand too. Incase you want to know a little bit more about me, I have put together a little something for you to read.

Dear Year 1 children and parents,

As we were unable to meet as we usually would before you joined us in Year 1 and as some of the usual events we would normally have may not be able to go ahead, I thought I would write you a letter, so you can get to know me a little bit better.

My name is Miss Westwood, I am a new member to the St. Edward’s family. I have had lots of experience in Year 1, Year 3 and Year 6 and I have thoroughly enjoyed them all for different reasons. I am currently teaching in Year 1, specifically 1JW. I am so pleased that I have such a wonderful class!

At university I studied Primary Education with a specialist focus on English. I love reading, baking and being outdoors. If I had to describe myself in 3 words I would say I was creative, motivated and organised.

I am really looking forward to the year ahead getting to know you and your child, if you need anything I am always here to listen and help where I can. There are many adults who may be working with your child at some point but in case any of you are unsure of what I look like, you can have a look at the 'Whos' Who' page.

We have many ways to communicate here at school, but currently the most efficient way would be to email the year1@stedward.bham.sch.uk email address which I am checking daily and will try to respond as quickly as I can.

Miss Westwood smiley

We have settled in really well and our routines are starting to embed. In the morning, the children are responsible for:

  • putting their drinks by the sink
  • putting their book bags away
  • hanging their coats up

As well as other roles and responsibilities they have been given.

As the children are now Year 1 we are encouraging them to try and be a bit more independent and to think about what they can do themselves to prepare for the school day. Please could you help us by checking that we always have our correct uniform, drink bottle and reading bag with our reading book every day?

Your child has been issued with a BGFL login incase any home learning needs to take place, could you please access it and send us a quick email to the year 1 email address so that we know the children's details work. If you have any issues with devices or computing equipment could you please let us know and we can arrange alternative provision.

We have already studied two books ‘Ruby’s Worry’ and ‘My Friend the Monster' which the children have loved. These books have provided us with a wonderful opportunity to discuss our feelings and emotions. The children have produced some wonderful artwork about things that make them happy and made ‘safeguarding hands’ where they have identified five people in school who they can talk to if they are worried.

Our topic ‘Marvellous Me’ has really interested the children and they have enjoyed learning about the different parts of the body and carrying out investigations around their senses.  We had fun trying to guess what was in the mystery box without using our sense of sight!

Our class Saint is Saint Francis of Assisi. We will be learning all about his life and why he is such a special Saint for us.

Autumn 2

Week 6:

We have explored two texts over the last few weeks: 'One Day on Our Blue Planet' and 'Where the Wild Things Are'.

One Day on Our Blue Planet is a non-fiction text. The children learnt about the different animals that live in The Savannah. The children also did some predicting and caption writing.

We explored animals in our Science lessons and we will continue to explore the different groups and their habitats.

In Maths the children are continuing to look at addition and subtraction. The children are creating number sentences. The children are using different resources (numicon, bead string, cubes).

In Phonics we are looking at phase 5. This week the children are re-visiting the 'ue', 'aw', 'wh' and 'ph' digraphs. The children will be doing reading and writing activities to support their revision. On Friday the children look at tricky words.

Our topic in RE is Advent. The children are discussing the meaning of 'preparation'. This week the children are discussing the preparations Mary made when she found out she was having a baby.

The children are also rehearsing their Nativity play and they are working really hard.

Our challenge this week is to learn 'When I'm 64' by The Beatles.

The children should be writing in pre-cursive handwriting.
